Pretty Much Everyone

Suffers from Anxiety

at some point in their day, their week

or their Life. 

And these days lately are not exactly 'stress-free'. 


Anxiety can be 'mild' as in deciding what food to prepare for company for dinner, or taking a test, or confronting someone at work or at home.

It can be a more extreme stress as in getting married, having a baby, or going off to war. 

It can also be debilitating, as in not being able to be around people, especially in a crowd, or even to the point of being afraid to go outside of the house. 

Depending on how an individual handles anxiety in these situations will determine how the stress affects them physically. 

People having anxiety feel a certain sense of dread for a future event that may or may not happen.

They exhibit nervous behaviors such as fear and worrying, pacing, racing heart, restlessness or inability to concentrate on the subject at hand. 

Years ago, I was at the point one day of having to suddenly leave all of my groceries in a cart in an aisle at the grocery store, and run out of the store as fast as I could. Everything felt like it was closing in on me. There were just too many people, lines seemed to not be moving, the fluorescent lights were burning my eyes and humming too loud, and scratchy loud music everywhere and smells of all kinds, all just ganged up on all of my senses at once. And made me book it outa there. So I Do have an idea of what anxiety or even an anxiety or panic attack feels like.

Also one night, as a barely-trained home health aide, I had to talk someone down from having a full-blown anxiety attack in the middle of the night, lasting the whole entire night until the sun Finally came up. 

It Is Not Fun.

what are the symptoms of anxiety?


“The term anxiety covers four aspects of experiences that an individual may have: mental apprehension, physical tension, physical symptoms and dissociative anxiety. The emotions present in anxiety disorders range from simple nervousness to bouts of terror” (wikipedia). 


Some symptoms of anxiety include:

feeling on edge all of the time,

feelings of dread, 

a feeling of being paralyzed, 

headaches,

nervous stomach,

shakiness,

racing heart,

easily fatigued,

irritability,

lack of focus and difficulty in concentration,

tension in the body,

frequent urination or diarrhea,

uncontrollable worry,

sleep disorders including difficulty falling asleep

or staying asleep at night,

or nightmares.

Anxiety disorders do not just go away.

A person with an anxiety disorder cannot just 'calm down' either.

They may know that they are being irrational,

but do not have the capability to stop the feelings

or level of physical stress. 


Be aware of what you say to someone that is experiencing anxiety or depression.

A mental illness cannot just be 'willed' away. The person cannot just 'calm down' and 'relax'. That person will possibly experience anxiety and worry for quite a while, if not for the rest of their life.

Anxiety disorders are actually a group of mental disorders,

 and the most common mental illness in the U.S..


They include

Generalized Anxiety Disorder,

Panic Disorder,

Phobic Disorders,

Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD),

and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is very common these days. People with Generalized Anxiety Disorder have excessive anxiety or worries that last for months or years at a time. Unfortunately, it could be a long time before they finally seek help.  

Social Anxiety Disorder can include being afraid to talk or interact with others, fear of being judged or disapproved of by others, being self-conscious around others, or having a hard time making or keeping friends.

People with Social Anxiety may shake, blush, sweat, have a racing heart or feel nauseous while around other people.

They can also feel dread for a future engagement for months ahead of time. 

Anxiety can be okay in certain situations, but worrying or being anxious for months at a time, or when physical symptoms begin to show up, may be the time to seek professional help.

how many people have anxiety disorders? 

I have seen numerous statistics on how many people around the world are affected by anxiety disorders and/or depression.

It seems like there is Not One part of our huge globe that there is No anxiety. 

According to the University of Queensland,

the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study that

will be released later this year, (2016):

1 in 13 people on our planet are affected by anxiety,

which equals approximately 350 million people.

Like depression, and occurring very close together most times, anxiety strikes more women than men, sometimes up to twice as many. 

Anxiety disorders affect approximately three and a half million U.S. adults. 

Unfortunately, as treatable as anxiety disorders are,

only about one third of sufferers receive help.

People tend to live with anxiety symptoms for many, many years before seeking treatment. 

There are many reasons for this, including lack of resources available, lack of funds for services, improperly trained providers, lack of insurance, or a lack of awareness of self or others in need of help.

What causes anxiety?

Anxiety can be appropriate in certain situations, as in a ‘fight or flight’ moment, when you either need to defend yourself or run, and in a hurry. You Do Want your adrenaline and cortisol to kick in at this point! 

Anxiety can be beneficial when you need to pay attention to what is going on around you, or when you have a deadline to meet. 

When anxiety is experienced constantly on a regular basis, or if it tends to take over the situation at hand or interferes with daily living, or begins to exhibit as physical symptoms, the person may need to seek professional help to see if they have an anxiety disorder. 


“Anxiety disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events”, according to the ADAA, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America


Anxious symptoms can begin as early as childhood. Trauma in childhood can make a person hyper-sensitive or hyper-reactive to stressful situations. 

Caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and pills can all affect how you respond to anxiety. They can all exacerbate anxious feelings.

Self-medicating with drugs or alcohol is only a short-lived cure.

Symptoms usually become worse when a person comes down off of the ‘high’.

The withdrawal itself from drugs or alcohol can also contribute to anxiety. 

Acute anxiety can lead to a diminished quality of life.

how is anxiety treated?

Usually a visit with your health care practitioner can begin the process of treatment for anxiety. 

Since Anxiety Disorder symptoms are generally similar to other disorders like Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, tests need to be taken in order to rule other things out.

Some physical conditions and some medications can mimic the symptoms of anxiety. 

A complete mental health check-up is also recommended, as anxiety disorders quite often are found in conjunction with another mental disorder (unfortunately!). 

Two or more disorders occurring together can make the symptoms a little worse, and the recovery a little bit harder. 

Mental health services including Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), lifestyle changes, or medications such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety pills are the normal routine for treating anxiety and depression. 

Anti-depressants have been found to be helpful with anxiety symptoms. Be aware though, that they are Not a Quick Fix, as they Do take a while to Really begin working. 

Anti-depressants, as with Most Prescription medications, can have many horrible side-effects, not the Least being ‘suicidal tendencies’! 

Young children and those under 18 should Not be on anti-depressants or anti-anxiety meds, but if they are, they need to be Closely Monitored!

what are some alternative ways to heal anxiety

Coping skills help a person to deal with stressful or anxious situations.

As a general rule, people learn better and more ways to cope with life as they get older.

Good coping skills usually help a person to have good mental health. 

Since poor coping skills can lead to anxiety and anxious feelings, a therapist will often work on strengthening a person’s ability to cope in stressful situations. Impulsivity, quick to anger, denial, avoidance and withdrawal are common signs of poor coping skills. 

Some Effective Ways To Cope With Anxiety: 

  1. Talking to a trusted and ‘safe’ person. It can be helpful to let out some of the thoughts that are causing you anxiety, and possibly get a different perspective on the situation. 
  2. Being able to relax in the moment is critical to reducing symptoms. Our page on Meditating The Easy Way will give you a do-able way to relax your body and mind, with little effort!  
  3. Exercise is an all-around and All-Important way to release the excess energy that nervous people usually have stored up. Try just going outside for a 5 or 10 or 15 minute walk. If you are enjoying yourself, it can turn out to be much longer and more joyful than you thought it would. While you are outside, try Giving Thanks to the sun for it’s Energy and Life, or a tree for it’s shade and for cleaning your air. Give thanks for any life-giving water around you. Smile and say Hi to someone. All are simple things on a short walk that Can help you to feel a little bit better. 
  4. Turn off the television, especially any news or politics or crime shows. Try to find something uplifting to watch, if you have to watch tv. 
  5. Put some music that you really enjoy on instead of television. 
  6. Stress-Management techniques go along with learning better coping skills. Being able to control your breathing and elevated heart rate can go a long way towards reducing your stress and anxiety level. (Learn more about this on our page here). 
  7. Support groups or ‘group therapy’ can be very beneficial. I know that I fought against going to one for quite a while. Didn't care what anyone else thought. Sometimes, tho, it can truly help a lot to talk it out, and hear other people’s viewpoints, or hear how someone else handled a similar situation. 
  8. Write out your thoughts - start a journal or a book that you may want to publish someday! (Why Not?!)
  9. Call and talk with or meet a friend. 
  10. Listen to music you enjoy, or play a musical instrument if you are able. Or even if you can't. 
  11. Sing, hum, whistle, dance, spin, jog, exercise to music! 
  12. Take a long shower.
  13. Take a nap. 
  14. Play or cuddle with your pet. 
  15. Play ball, by yourself or with whoever comes along.  
  16. Go to the movies.
  17. Clean something.
  18. Read. 
  19. Go swimming. 
  20. Try some essential oils for anxiety. 
  21. Write a letter to someone, whether you mail it or not. 
  22. Meditate! 
  23. Cook or bake something.
  24. Draw or paint something.
  25. Plant something
  26. Go for a drive somewhere new or different. 
  27. Make something.
  28. Fix something.
  29. Make a list of everything that you are grateful for. (Yes, There ARE MANY Things to be Grateful For!) 
  30. Get down on your knees and pray. 
  31. Do something nice for someone else. Without them finding out it was you.
  32. Hug someone.
  33. Stretch. Bend. Move. Breathe. 
  34. Make some goals. Small, realistic ones that you can keep. 
  35. Make a list of your own 'coping skills', activities that can help you to cope with the stress or worry or anxiety that you are feeling. 

Prescription medication, as much as I am against them in general, can be beneficial in helping to correct a chemical imbalance in the brain.

However, medications take time to work.

And they May work, or they May Not work.

And they have their share of side effects.

Including suicidal feelings.

And trying to get Off of any meds can be grueling in and of itself.

That’s Impossible. Why would I do That?!

Nothing in this Universe comes and tries to ‘get you’. The Nature of the Universe is Joy. It is Wellness and Well-Being. It is Abundance Flowing Towards Us. It is the Light. There Is No Darkness, there is Only Light.
